(Video Sharing) Dragon Boat Festival

We would like children to know more about Chinese traditional customs. With Dragon Boat Festival approaching, we arranged activities for children to learn about the tradition of making rice dumplings and dragon boat racing. Teachers introduced the ingredients of rice dumplings and demonstrated different wrapping methods for rice dumplings to K1 children. K2 and K3 children are more mature with their hand-eye coordination – they got a chance to enjoy a first-hand experience of making rice dumplings. Besides, we arranged a session of mixed-age activity, allowing K1, K2, and K3 children to simulate a dragon boat race. The difficulty is higher for older children to train their coordination and cooperation. K3 children showed sportsmanship in the race, not only did they let K1 start first but also applauded the others even when they lost. They also know how to enjoy the game and treasure the fun time.

The pandemic has reduced the chances for children to go out. They do not know much about their community. Therefore, teachers took children outside school, allowing them to look around and learn more about the instruction signs, facilities, shops, people, etc. K2 children are learning different methods of recording and statistics. They would record their observations and continue the exploration back at school.

Although we need to suspend face-to-face classes again due to the epidemic, our school still arranged Chinese New Year activities for children before the suspension to let them experience the flower market and pay a New Year call. Since we have lived in the epidemic for the last two years, children have not visited a real flower market before. They are all very excited about visiting “Kau Yan Flower Market” and bringing home many new year items!
